Work Package 4: Geologic mapping of European regions for underground storage of hydrogen

WP4 was establishedon the hypothesis that salt caverns should become the major storage option for hydrogen underground storage. This is due to the positive experience with full scale storage caverns, their greater flexibility when operated on a high-cyclicity basis, and the relatively low proportion of cushion gas. However, this type of formation are not present homogenously across European countries, therefore other suitable options will also have to be identified. WP4 will deliver a thorough analysis and mapping of geological formations suitable for bulk high pressure hydrogen storage, such as:

  • depleted oil & gas fields,
  • deep aquifers,
  • rock salt deposits.

For each type of formation, a set of criteria will first be established, for estimating hydrogen storage capacity assessment procedures.

This work package is led by DEEP from Germany.
